Nabi pernah mengingatkan kita tentang usia. “Umur umatku antara 60-70 tahun,” (HR. Tirmidzi dari Abu Hurairah, Tirmidzi berkata: Hasan Gharib). Rata-rata usia umat Nabi ini jika diukur dengan usia umat terdahulu pasti sangatlah jauh. Bukankah dakwahnya Nabi Nuh saja 950 tahun? Dengan sangat pendeknya usia kita, maka pendek pula waktu yang kita punyai untuk berbuat dan mengukir prestasi di dunia ini. Peringatan ini disampaikan, agar kita sangat berhati hati dengan waktu yang berlalu tanpa karya. Mengingat tugas kita sebagai muslim sangat besar yaitu mengurusi bumi ini.
Itu artinya, kita dituntut untuk menjadi gemilang dalam usia belia. Tidak membuang waktu percuma. Dari sini kita semakin memahami hikmah besar dari ayat-ayat yang memerintahkan kita untuk memperhatikan waktu dengan sumpah-sumpah Allah. Demi masa, Demi waktu dhuha, Demi malam jika menyelimuti, Demi siang yang menampakkan dan sebagainya.
Kita pun semakin mengerti mengapa orang beriman sejati ditandai dengan hilangnya kesia-siaan dalam hidupnya. Mari kita perhatikan ayat berikut : “Dan orang-orang yang menjauhkan diri dari (perbuatan dan perkataan) yang tiada berguna.” (Qs. Al-Mukminun: 3)
Ayat ini langsung disampaikan setelah ciri pertama orang beriman adalah mereka yang khusyu’ dalam shalatnya. Bahkan kesadaran dan kemampuan membayar zakat baru disampaikan setelah ayat ini. Begitu pentingnya, tema menjauhi hal yang tiada berguna dengan dikedepankan langsung setelah shalat dan sebelum zakat. Hal serupa diulang dalam ayat yang mengungkap ciri ‘ibadurrahman (hamba-hamba Allah Yang Rahman),
“Dan hamba-hamba Tuhan yang Maha Penyayang itu (ialah) orang-orang yang berjalan di atas bumi dengan rendah hati dan apabila orang-orang jahil menyapa mereka, mereka mengucapkan kata-kata (yang mengandung) keselamatan.” (Qs. Al-Furqan: 63)
Orang-orang jahil yang banyak hidup dalam kesia-siaan, tidak ditanggapinya. Tidak mungkin ‘ibadurrahman berkumpul dengan orang-orang yang hanya membuang percuma hidupnya. Ayat ini bahkan menjadi ayat pertama yang menyampaikan tentang tanda-tanda hamba Allah yang Maha Pengasih.
Dalam hadits-hadits Nabi juga demikian. Tidak sedikit hadits yang mengingatkan agar kita tidak terjebak pada menghamburkan usia. Di antara sabda beliau yang singkat tetapi dahsyat adalah, “Sebaik-baik keislaman seseorang adalah yang meninggalkan hal yang tidak bermanfaat baginya.” (HR. Ahmad, Tirmidzi, Ibnu Majah)
Di zaman penuh dengan perhitungan materi ini, dikenal sebuah ungkapan nilai mahal sebuah waktu. Time is money, begitu kata mereka. Membuang waktu hidup sia-sia artinya membuang uang. Zaman akhirnya mencoba berbagai upaya melakukan lompatan potensi dan efektifitas segala hal. Agar hasil gemilang diraih dalam waktu tercepat dengan tenaga efektif.

Tetapi sampai hari ini, kita yang mengikuti alur pendidikan formal dari awal hingga akhir, perlu waktu 16 tahun (SD 6 tahun, SMP 3 tahun, SMA 3 tahun, Universitas 4 tahun). Jika mulai masuk SD dalam usia 7 tahun, artinya kita baru keluar dari ruangan kelas dalam umur 23 tahun. Biasanya, setelah itu baru berpikir untuk berkarya dalam dunia nyata, ada yang berhasil tetapi tidak sedikit pula yang tidak tahu apa yang harus dilakukan. Ini belum dihitung jika dia mulai sekolah sejak usia balita dan selanjutnya TK, atau masih ditambah dengan pendidikan S2 dan S3. Panjang dan sangat panjang.

Jika itu keadaan kita hari ini. Dan kita ada di dalamnya mengikuti arus dan alur tanpa ‘protes’ sedikit pun. Tanpa ada langkah nyata yang kita lakukan untuk menggeliat. Jangankan menggeliat, terpikir bahwa yang telah mengalir hari ini tidak maksimal pun, jangan-jangan tidak. Agar kita terbangun. Terbangun untuk memperbaiki zaman ini. Terbangun bahwa ternyata sistem Islam benar-benar harus kembali hari ini. Terbangun bahwa memang tidak ada pendidik sejati seperti Rasulullah yang menjadi tonggal awal semua keberhasilan sistim produktif. Sejarah Islam akhir zaman yang di mulai dari generasi Nabi Muhammad, telah membuktikan itu. Irit usia dengan segudang prestasi. Jika dirata-rata, beginilah urutan perjalanan usia di masa itu:
• 8 – 10 tahun : Hapal al-Qur’an 30 juz
• Belasan tahun: Hapal kitab hadits, belajar fikih, bahasa dan ilmu-ilmu lainnya
• 20an tahun : Menjadi orang besar di masyarakatnya dengan prestasi gemilang
Inilah sistim yang pernah dibuat oleh umat Islam selama memakmurkan bumi dengan prestasi-prestasi yang sesungguhnya karya mereka lebih hebat dari karya para ilmuwan barat hari ini. Sungguh, begitulah bahkan ungkapan para ilmuwan barat sendiri, hari ini.
Dan inilah sebagian data para penghafal al-Qur’an di usia dini:
• Imam Syafi’i (150 H-204H) . Hafal Al-Quran ketika usia 7 tahun.
• Imam Ath-Thabari ( 224 H – 310 H), hafal Al-Quran pada usia 7 tahun, usia 8 tahun menjadi imam shalat dan mulai menulis hadits pada usia 9 tahun.
• Ibnu Qudamah ( 541 H – 620 H). Hafal Al-Quran usia 10 tahun.
• Ibnu Sina ( 370 H- 428 H), Hafal Al-Quran umur 5 tahun.
• Imam Nawawi. Hafal Al-Quran sebelum baligh.
• Imam Ahmad bin Hambal . Hafal Al-Quran sejak kecil.
• Ibnu Khaldun ( 732 H- 808 H). Hafal Al-Quran usia 7 tahun.
• As-Suyuthi (w: 911 H), hafal al-Qur’an sebelum umur 8 tahun, umur 15 tahun hafal kitab al-Umdah, Minhaj al-Fiqh wa al-Ushul, Alfiyah Ibn Malik.
• Umar bin Abdul Aziz hafal al-Qur’an saat masih kecil
• Ibnu Hajar al-Atsqalani (w: 852 H) hafal al-Qur’an usia 9 tahun
• Jamaluddin al-Mizzi (w: 742 H), hafal al-Qur’an saat kecil

Lihatlah Umar bin Abdul Aziz seorang pemimpin tertinggi yang fantastik, hanya dalam 29 bulan mampu menghadirkan masyarakat yang adil dan sejahtera. Ini bagian dari sistim yang harus dihadirkan kembali hari ini. Menghafal al-Qur’an adalah tangga standar yang harus dilalui oleh setiap generasi muslim, apapun keahlian mereka nantinya.
Dan inilah sebagian bukti kehebatan sistem Islam dalam menghadirkan generasi hebat di usia belia:
• Pada usia 11 tahun Zaid bin Tsabit berhasil menguasai bahasa ibrani (Bahasa Yahudi) hanya dalam 17 hari
• Pada usia 15 tahun Abdullah bin Umar ikut dalam jihad pertamanya di Perang Uhud setelah sebelumnya di Perang Badar ditolak karena masih berusia 14 tahun
• Pada usia 15 tahun Imam Syafi’i sudah memberikan fatwa
• Pada usia16 tahun Zaid bin Tsabit ikut jihad pertama kali di Perang Khandak setelah ditolak pada Perang Badar karena usianya baru 12 tahun
• Pada usia 17 tahun Imam Bukhari mendalami hadits dari para gurunya dan pada usia itu pula Abu Hamid al-Isfirayini menjadi mufti
• 18 Tahun Usamah bin Zaid menjadi panglima perang melawan salah satu pasukan Romawi dan menang Aisyah menjadi guru besar bagi masyarakat sepeninggal Rasulullah yang berlangsung selama 47 tahun, setelah membuktikan diri menjadi pembelajar yang hebat pada usia 9-18 tahun Bukhari mulai menulis
• Pada usia 22 tahun Zaid bin Tsabit memimpin tim pengumpulan mushaf al-Qur’an di masa kekhilafahan Abu Bakar
• Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih menjadi sultan Turki Utsmani juga pada usia 22 tahun
• 23 tahun : Umar bin Abdul Aziz menjadi gubernur Madinah
• 24 tahun : Fathimah meninggal dan telah melahirkan dan mendidik dua orang hebat dalam sejarah Islam Hasan dan Husain
• 24 tahun : Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih menaklukkan benteng legendaris konstantinopel
